PiscesEach year, when the Sun moves into Pisces we feel nature’s enigmatic pause punctuating the ending of winter and hinting at the beginning of spring; when new life, new possibilities, thrust upward merging with the light of the Sun. In astrology this process is analogous to our unconscious mind merging with our conscious mind. Our unconscious is speaking to us all the time but because it communicates in a circuitous path, similar to the umbilical cord connecting the two fish in the constellation Pisces, our conscious mind has difficulty understanding what it is saying. Astrology is the oldest living practice listening to our unconscious speaking and seeking an understanding of what it is saying.

As the Sun journeys through Pisces we on earth are challenged to grow in conscious awareness and allow some aspect of our individuality to take a new form and manifest in the world. When under the influence of Pisces we experience the unfathomable depth of our unconscious, an experience akin to swimming in the undifferentiated waters of our individuality where our identity slipping through our fingers is as impossible to hold onto as a hand full of water. Needless to say, this experience can be extremely confusing to our conscious mind and we may feel ourselves drowning in uncertainty and self doubt. When that happens it is important to remember that our conscious mind is being softened, becoming more porous, less impervious, to our unconscious speaking. This is a good thing because it helps our conscious mind grow in self awareness allowing our individuality to shift shape and expand in new forms throughout our life. This keeps us young and wise at the same time.

Every month the Moon (our unconscious body) and the Sun (our conscious body) stand opposing one another, which we visibly experience gazing at the illuminated face of the full Moon. This month, the earth slips between the two before the deep resonating voice of the Moon shines for all to hear, and for a few hours our unconscious mind stands eclipsed, shunned by the light of the Sun. What I think happens to us when the earth and Sun speak without the mediating light of a glowing Moon beam is that we experience an undiluted dose of consciousness in what ever sign the Sun is moving through. In Pisces we are asked to flow more with what “is”, be less self determining, and pay more attention to that thing inside ourselves which is aching to be born. But before any of this can happen we have to hear the voice of our unconscious speaking, and the Moon in Virgo is asking us to become more complete within ourselves, less susceptible to the “slings and arrows” from others, and to garner our individuality with a more discriminating eye separating the “wheat from the chaff”.
