When we have the sensitivity to listen one of the gifts of astrology is hearing the breath of the cosmos dancing in our ear whispering a gentle truth. I was given just such a gift yesterday from two unrelated sources each offering a passionate plea for the life force of change. The first, came from an astrologer born under the illumination of a Cancer Full Moon, the Moon in Capricorn, reminding me of the inevitable changes in our perception of our home when we are under the nurturing influence of Cancer. And the second came from a dear friend born when Venus was conjoined Jupiter in Cancer sharing with me his personal discovery that change is the very essence of our life force and that without making changes within ourself we whither and die becoming an animated corpse awakening each new day void of life. “My soul, where are you? Do you hear me? I speak. I call you – are you there? I have returned. I am here again. I have shaken the dust off all lands from my feet, and I have come to you. I am with you. After long years of long wandering, I have come to you again. Should I tell you everything I have seen, experienced and drunk in? Or do you want to hear about all the noise of life and the world? But one thing you must know: the one thing I have learned is that one must live this life.” * Recent events in my life have turned my head around and I now find myself walking forward looking backward reflecting on the life I lived fourteen years ago. At that time Saturn was transiting my natal fourth house, now in 2010, perky in my tenth and approaching a second Saturn return, Saturn challenges me to consider more deeply the source of my origin. A devil -may -care attitude permeates a New Moon in Sagittarius pricking our hearts with a well aimed arrow we feel expansive and exuberant daring to express our feelings in a new way. Last month, under the guidance of the Scorpio New Moon, we penetrated the dark emotion of fear and discovered a rich vein of regenerative energy that helped us heal an emotional wound from our past. Now that we are a little more forgiving of our past and hopefully a lot more accepting of our feelings the Sagittarius New Moon provides a fresh view of both. The Sagittarius New Moon is always the last lunar cycle of the year suggesting that as the year ends so too our patterns of behavior that have prevented us from feeling safe, secure, and comfortable in our own skin. “We stand at a critical moment in Earth’s history, a time when humanity must choose its future. As the world becomes increasingly interdependent and fragile, the future at once holds great peril and great promise. To move forward we must recognize that in the midst of a magnificent diversity of cultures and life forms we are one human family and one Earth community with a common destiny. We must join together to bring forth a sustainable global society founded on respect for nature, universal human rights, economic justice, and a culture of peace. Towards this end, it is imperative that we, the peoples of Earth, declare our responsibility to one another, to the greater community of life, and to future generations – The Earth Charter.”* Read the rest of this entry »

Wisdom is knowing in depth the great metaphors of meaning. G.C. Jung
Falling light shrouds Sagittarius with mystery and wonder pricking our curiosity to reach beyond what is familiar and ordinary in our life. Our Earth, in its annual orbit around the Sun, has entered Sagittarius encouraging our leap of faith to free fall into the arms of the unknown. Each year at this time the nights are longer than the days freeing our mind from daylight activities to ponder the complexities and significance of human existence. When we are under the influence of Sagittarius we are more visionary than romantic, our body, mind, and spirit scratching an inner itch to grow and expand our understanding of ourself and our place in the Universe. Each New Moon conjoining of the Sun and Moon gives birth to a new awakening in self-awareness that sheds light on an aspect of our unconscious motives. On November 16 the Sun and Moon conjoined in Scorpio directing our attention to those hidden forces in nature, and in the human psyche, that eliminate excess and waste. Scorpio is the celestial billboard of middle autumn, the annual season of decay in nature, when excess vegetation breaks down into a blackening detritus that becomes essential for the nourishing of the earth and the planting of new seeds. The process of blackening in alchemy is a process of purification called the nigredo and is understood to represent the state of chaos out of which creative form is made manifest. In astrology human consciousness traverses a parallel path with nature’s own, and during middle autumn, under the influence of Scorpio, we find ourself wrestling with the season for eliminating our emotional excesses and waste. If your libido perked up the last few days it may have something to do with Venus entering Scorpio and shifting our amorous attention from the aesthetic grace of Libra to an intense desire to merge. Venus is that aspect in each of us aware of the sensual pleasures of love and when our goddess of love is in Scorpio those pleasures acquire an intensity that can feel overwhelming if not handled with wisdom. Scorpio is that aspect in each of us seeking emotional security, and when Scorpio is mated with Venus relationships become the area in our life where we seek emotional security, and consequently, feel ourself most vulnerable and emotionally exposed. It is feeling intensely vulnerable when under the influence of Scorpio that has earned this much maligned sign the troubled reputation for being secretive and manipulative when it may be more accurate to say that “still waters run deep.” Read the rest of this entry »

“When the essentially spiritual impulse behind Neptunian yearnings is understood, a torrent of creativity is released.”
Neptune in Aquarius stationed direct on November 4, and shifting our attention from the inside to the outside we may feel a prickly discontent with our physical limitations; our home confining, our work unimaginative, our body aging, our relationships unsatisfying, our money never enough. Many western cultures, most notably the United States, have ruthlessly manipulated human discontent by creating glamorous, fantasy adds that place a quenchless yearning for something more wholesale on the auction block sold to the highest bidder. But, as astrologer Jessica Murray poignantly reminds us in her quote above, the yearnings of Neptune have little to do with material satisfaction; Neptune is that aspect in each of us that wants to be boundless, amorphous, and united in undifferentiated union with the source of All-That-Is. In cultures around the world it is said that on November 1 and 2 the portals open between the living and the dead allowing us on Earth to mourn the one in celebration of the other. What makes this November 2 an even more potent celebration of life is the Scorpio Full Moon; the annual Full Moon of death and transformation. Every month the milky-white luminosity of a Full Moon reflects the life force of the Sun beaming sweet nourishment to our soul. Every autumn when the Sun enters Scorpio we experience a breaking down of our individuality, and when the Sun in Scorpio opposes the Moon in Taurus we begin breaking down the hollowed, inauthentic aspects of ourself that have starved our soul. The Moon is exalted in Taurus creating enduring change and growth, and when the Moon is full in Taurus the promised growth becomes our reality when we understand that material security comes from the deepest roots of our being. The hollowing and the withering away of life has been ritually celebrated for thousands of years in civilizations throughout the world as diverse as the Celts and the Aztecs. In each of these cultures the first of November is a time of opening the portals between worlds allowing for connections to flow freely between the living and the dead. I live in Mexico a culture of indigenous rituals morphed into catholic devotion; and November 1 and 2, in syncopation with All Saint’s and All Soul’s Day, is celebrated as El Dia de Los Muertos, or Day of the Dead. Each year at this time families picnic in graveyards sharing in the favorite foods of departed loved ones, and alters consecrated to the dead are adorned with marigolds, candles, a special bread, favorite foods, and objects that captivated the spirit when alive.
