Every known civilization has shared a similar concept of the Great Round of Life reflecting the living sense of an eternal rhythm of growing, flowering, decaying. The zodiac in astrology was born from the womb of such a rhythm observed in the daily rising and setting of the Sun, the monthly phasing of the Moon, and the seasonal changing of the year. The circular frame of the chart representing the constellations along the ecliptic and the months of the year order time and space within a cyclical continuum of movement; with the beginning becoming the ending becoming the beginning. Today, the day before the Autumnal Equinox, the waning Gemini Moon squares the last degree of the Sun in Virgo, and with a quiet finality brings to completion the lunar cycle which began at the Virgo new Moon. Gemini and Virgo are both under the ruling guidance of our celestial messenger and great communicator, Mercury, whose wisdom is directing this waning Moon and our attention to an internal conflict with our perception of “what is”. Interestingly so, this is the second waning Gemini Moon within the past month, making it all the more urgent that we comprehend with conscious awareness how we perceive our reality. Liz Greene reminds us that Mercury, possessing the keys to knowledge, becomes our cosmic messenger unhindered to journey to and fro between the gods and between the gods and mortal humankind. In ancient mythologies, The Greek Hermes, the Egyptian Throth, and the Tuetonic Loki, are symbols of the way we perceive, as well as, how we order our perceptions so that they can be comprehended and communicated. Ultimately, Mercury is that urge in each of us to understand; to integrate unconscious motive with conscious recognition.* Read the rest of this entry »

The Moon is the fastest moving celestial body moving from sign to sign in two and a half days at which time we may feel a shift in our mood depending upon what astrological signs reign predominant in our birth chart. The last two days the Moon glowed in Aries, our emotions flared, and most likely we experienced an event during that time which pricked our feelings causing us to re-act with quickened defense. This Aries Moon was in conflict with Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, and the Sun which significantly distorted the usual flow of our life, disrupting the peace and harmony so precious to Libra. It is not surprising that many of us found ourselves feeling frustrated when we asserted our emotional needs. If our relationships felt “lopsided” or “out of whack” it might have been because we were unwittingly igniting our internal disharmony breathing flames out into the world. Today, the Moon flows exalted in Taurus, feeling secure and robust, dancing in harmony with Jupiter, Saturn, and the Sun, the Moon promises a day when we walk with our feet firmly upon the Earth, facing our responsibilities with calm courage and secure knowing that we have the skills necessary to achieve our goals. Gone are the emotional fireworks of the last days allowing us to sit content in the enduring silence of the Earth. Read the rest of this entry »

This weekend, as the Moon moved from Aquarius into Pisces, I felt myself seduced by the melancholic musing of a symphony of ancestral Sirens looming wistfully upon the Moon glow sea luring me, with the tenderest playing of their silver harps, into the turbulent waters of my unconscious longing. Even as I write I feel the echoes of their musing prick at my heart made heavy with an indescribable losing of something precious. When we are under the influence of Pisces we can become painfully aware of our isolation and separateness in life and feel our self drowning with an unfathomable longing for union. Our longing can take on phantom proportions, manifesting in restlessness and tremendous dissatisfaction, feeling that nothing in the material world can provide that which we are seeking. When this happens it is important to remind our self that we are being called upon by the wisdom of our ancestors to swim deeper into the water of the collective unconscious. Today’s Capricorn Moon strengthens our emotional resolve with disciplines and responsibilities that could feel a little burdensome especially if our feelings are rejected by someone we love. The Moon, our nurturing mother within, is connecting with the two beneficent planets in the celestial sky: first, making a frustrating square to Venus sensitizing our attention to emotional rejection; and then, making a joyful trine to Jupiter and Saturn which can help divert our hurt feelings toward concern for an issue greater than ourselves if we do not exaggerate our feelings and infuse our day with a somber moodiness. It is important remembering that the choice is always ours to guide our individual star-ship as we will and create the quality of our life moment to moment. Read the rest of this entry »

This is not a good month to tolerate course or crude behavior in self or other because Mercury, Venus, and Mars, our three most personal planets in the celestial sky, are comrades in Libra highlighting our desire for beauty in word and in deed. At least this is one traditional understanding of Libra, another, is the tenacity of this air sign to seek balance in every situation and to upset, whenever possible, falsity and disingenuous sentiment. When we are under the influence of Libra we need harmony and balance in our life, and we can find ourselves profoundly disturbed when our relationships are lopsided or deformed because they are lacking honesty and sincerity. It is true that Libra has a propensity for not telling the truth in order to maintain peace but this never lasts long because this deception ends up disrupting the very thing Libra is seeking - balance in form. A Sagittarius Moon illuminates the philosopher within each of our hearts, but the waxing square to the Sun and Saturn in Virgo can expose self- doubts that prick self-defeating dissatisfaction. If we let this happen we could experience this week with a restless spirit * which, if unattended, could interfere with our ability to see the “bigger picture” looming on the horizon; urging us to gather the strength of our convictions and put our beliefs into action. Mercury and Mars conjoin on September 8, translating thought into action, and Pluto at 28 Sagittarius 30 stations direct heralding a shift in consciousness that could expose self-righteous fanaticism as the damning and damaging social agent that it is. The two social planets, Jupiter and Saturn, make a harmonious union in earth signs giving us a gentle celestial kick in the pants to manifest in form something that until now has seemed greater than our self, somehow beyond our reach, but now is close at hand. The only danger is that we may be lulled into the ease of the trine accepting, at face value, that which we know needs further examination. Don’t be fooled into believing that things will get better without having to work to make it so. The last aspect the waxing new Moon makes is a conjunction to Pluto giving us the emotional stamina to penetrate beyond superficiality and the psychological acumen to know when we are being manipulated. It is up to each of us to use this transit with a wise worn believing that what we believe matters and can make a difference.
* I encourage you to read Julie Demboski’s weekly forecast for further insights into why this may be so, and to partake in her astrological wisdom.

Four months ago Jupiter, the planet of expansion, stationed retrograde in Capricorn and our intentions that were set on expanding our material wealth dramatically shifted focus forcing us to expand in conscious awareness how we can be responsible with the wealth we have. For most of us these past months have brought financial challenges in one way or another that have, if we were lucky, only sharpened our wits and tightened our belts. On the darker side, too many people lost their jobs, their homes, their communities, and most tragically, their lives. On September 7 Jupiter stations direct and once again our attention is re-directed only this time we are challenged to discover ways to expand out in the world our newly discovered responsibilities so that we can garner the wealth and prosperity of life in benefit for all. Yesterday the Sun and Saturn conjoined in Virgo, ouch, if we allowed our shinning light to dim in self dissatisfaction or our feet to become leaden upon the fallow Earth. The sign Virgo signifies the annual harvesting of the fertile productivity of Mother Earth providing a time of abundance tempered with cautionary concern directed at successfully managing our bounty so that it will last until the next harvesting. When the Sun is in Virgo our individuality is filled with the bountiful harvest of our life experiences which we then diligently work to preserve for the benefit of others. When under the influence of Saturn our gaze turns toward responsibility, and this Sun and Saturn conjoining adds to our sense of self-discipline and self-sufficiency. This transit can bring us a deep comfort in accepting responsibility for who we are if we have successfully integrated our imperfections with our accomplishments, and if not, not to worry, we are offered another opportunity to try again. It’s time to prick up our ears and listen to what is going on around us, but not in the old, familiar way by focusing our attention on the thoughts and ideas of others. The Virgo new Moon, gently guiding our attention within, has little interest in mimicking what others are thinking. At this moment in time, we are being challenged to think for our self without losing our capacity for negotiation. Admittedly a challenging combo considering that most of us are not particularly adept at effective negotiation of the kind that considers all sides of an issue before making a decision. When under the influence of Virgo we are expert analyzers and can discern what is necessary for the well being of everyone involved, after all, the ancient symbol of Virgo embodies the sacred work of the temple priestesses who assumed sole responsibility for storing and distributing the collected grain in order to insure that the entire community survived the year. It is with the same sense of responsibility to the well being of everyone involved that the Virgo new Moon is directing our attention, first within our self offering us the possibility to think on our own, and second, to consider how we can be of service to our community while independent of the status quo.
