The waxing phase of every lunar cycle, better known as the first quarter Moon, is visible to us on Earth as two equal half circles one of lightness and the other of darkness. The waxing phase always marks a period of equilibrium before we are urged to take action along with the advancing light of the Moon culminating in the glowing face of the Full Moon. The Libra new Moon has the waxing face of Capricorn challenging us to behave with emotional maturity in our relationships in order to give form to something that we value. Capricorn brings sobriety to our relationships highlighting self-discipline and personal responsibility. On the side of the light Capricorn garners stability leading to lasting commitment and on the side of the dark it tends toward blind allegiance to a cold authority. Saturn, ruler of Capricorn, has a propensity for introducing us to our shadow self by showing us the face we fear within reflected in the behavior of others, Sadly we then judge and severely punish the other without awareness that we are also punishing ourself. Our fear of facing our darker self is clearly the roots of racism, sexism, bigotry, and all other forms of social injustice. When we are under the influence of Capricorn we are sensitive to the cold hands of authority limiting, restricting, denying, and when the Moon is under the influence of Capricorn it is worth considering which of our emotions we may be denying expression. The Capricorn waxing Moon is a challenged calling for us to look at the face of our fear in hope that we can see the source of our emotional denial. Read the rest of this entry »

Today, the Sun and Mercury conjoin in Libra marking the culmination of Mercury’s retrograde station and the high point in our awareness of how we communicate what is of value to us. In nine days, on October 15, Mercury will station direct and the passing days between are offering us the possibility for assimilating and dispersing a more genuinely honest, what Terry Lamb refers to as authentic, communication with ourself, and between ourself and others. Both the Sun and Mercury in Libra make a square to Jupiter in Capricorn, presenting us with a dress rehearsal for tomorrows Capricorn waxing Moon. These two celestial conversations, the Sun and Jupiter and Mercury and Jupiter, introduce the theme of self-discipline, personal responsibility, and stable commitment to our perception of our purpose and cause in life. Astrology recognizes that the beginning of any event carries the seed that will give form to that event; and so, today, the first day of a new month, the planet Mars, god of war, makes a harmonious aspect to the planet Pluto, god of the underworld, and we on Earth are given this opportunity to creatively transform how we assert our will and take action to achieve what we want. Taking action is always guaranteed when Mars and Pluto are in dialogue; the quality of the action depends solely upon our self-awareness. We need only consider the devastation and death ravaging Mother Earth to comprehend the horrors that these two forces can produce. Luckily, we are given a celestial helping hand this month, as the Sun and Mercury sojourn in Libra, to gain a better balance between asserting what we want in tandem with others asserting what they want. Negotiation and compromise are very much in the air working together with the self determination of Mars and the ruthlessness of Pluto to balance the scales. Read the rest of this entry »

Each and every month the Sun and Moon meet face to face and enjoying a brief tête á tête invite us to set our intentions for the coming month by directing our attention to the concerns of the sign they are in. This month they embrace in the Venus ruled sign of Libra and peace and harmony in our relationships are foremost in our hearts. Because the Moon expresses our unconscious motives and the Sun our conscious realizations, this month, the solar and lunar lights bring us a golden opportunity for illuminating the unconscious motives we reflect in our conscious realizations of our relationships with others. Mercury is that aspect within each of us ordering our perception of reality so that we can comprehend and communicate what we are experiencing inside and outside ourself. Mercury is our mind breathing inhaling and exhaling our experiences, circulating our understanding of what is being translated between our unconscious motives and our conscious realizations. Every time Mercury stations retrograde we are given a second chance to evaluate what exactly is going on inside and outside ourself. Read the rest of this entry »

Personally I adore the fall months, comforting as they are to my natal Scorpio Moon, I always feel this season a returning to the security of my original home, the blessed womb. With arms open I welcome the descending of daylight into night, and embrace the coming months as a precious time for contemplating what has passed. Fall begins the season of self scrutiny inviting us to turn in naked honesty to face our failures along with our successes. Admittedly this can be excruciatingly painful but absolutely necessary if we are to grow in self awareness, which is one promised gift of the Autumnal Equinox if we have the courage to receive it. Every known civilization has shared a similar concept of the Great Round of Life reflecting the living sense of an eternal rhythm of growing, flowering, decaying. The zodiac in astrology was born from the womb of such a rhythm observed in the daily rising and setting of the Sun, the monthly phasing of the Moon, and the seasonal changing of the year. The circular frame of the chart representing the constellations along the ecliptic and the months of the year order time and space within a cyclical continuum of movement; with the beginning becoming the ending becoming the beginning. Today, the day before the Autumnal Equinox, the waning Gemini Moon squares the last degree of the Sun in Virgo, and with a quiet finality brings to completion the lunar cycle which began at the Virgo new Moon. Gemini and Virgo are both under the ruling guidance of our celestial messenger and great communicator, Mercury, whose wisdom is directing this waning Moon and our attention to an internal conflict with our perception of “what is”. Interestingly so, this is the second waning Gemini Moon within the past month, making it all the more urgent that we comprehend with conscious awareness how we perceive our reality. Liz Greene reminds us that Mercury, possessing the keys to knowledge, becomes our cosmic messenger unhindered to journey to and fro between the gods and between the gods and mortal humankind. In ancient mythologies, The Greek Hermes, the Egyptian Throth, and the Tuetonic Loki, are symbols of the way we perceive, as well as, how we order our perceptions so that they can be comprehended and communicated. Ultimately, Mercury is that urge in each of us to understand; to integrate unconscious motive with conscious recognition.* Read the rest of this entry »

The Moon is the fastest moving celestial body moving from sign to sign in two and a half days at which time we may feel a shift in our mood depending upon what astrological signs reign predominant in our birth chart. The last two days the Moon glowed in Aries, our emotions flared, and most likely we experienced an event during that time which pricked our feelings causing us to re-act with quickened defense. This Aries Moon was in conflict with Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, and the Sun which significantly distorted the usual flow of our life, disrupting the peace and harmony so precious to Libra. It is not surprising that many of us found ourselves feeling frustrated when we asserted our emotional needs. If our relationships felt “lopsided” or “out of whack” it might have been because we were unwittingly igniting our internal disharmony breathing flames out into the world. Today, the Moon flows exalted in Taurus, feeling secure and robust, dancing in harmony with Jupiter, Saturn, and the Sun, the Moon promises a day when we walk with our feet firmly upon the Earth, facing our responsibilities with calm courage and secure knowing that we have the skills necessary to achieve our goals. Gone are the emotional fireworks of the last days allowing us to sit content in the enduring silence of the Earth. Read the rest of this entry »

This weekend, as the Moon moved from Aquarius into Pisces, I felt myself seduced by the melancholic musing of a symphony of ancestral Sirens looming wistfully upon the Moon glow sea luring me, with the tenderest playing of their silver harps, into the turbulent waters of my unconscious longing. Even as I write I feel the echoes of their musing prick at my heart made heavy with an indescribable losing of something precious. When we are under the influence of Pisces we can become painfully aware of our isolation and separateness in life and feel our self drowning with an unfathomable longing for union. Our longing can take on phantom proportions, manifesting in restlessness and tremendous dissatisfaction, feeling that nothing in the material world can provide that which we are seeking. When this happens it is important to remind our self that we are being called upon by the wisdom of our ancestors to swim deeper into the water of the collective unconscious.
